In the absence of any reply from BT, except the usual and most unhelpful brush-off, I've solved my own problem.

The problem seems to be with the Email program built into Android Honeycomb.  If you download K9 from the market, it will install easily and seems to run perfectly.  Hooray!

So... what you're saying is, what wasn't actually BT's fault is still somehow BT's fault.

Nice.  If that had been directed at me I'd be expecting an apology right about now.

/sigh

I am sorry that you feel that BT have been unhelpful, pmgrant1948.  Whilst we can't supply support for every mobile device in this rapidly growing market, we are usually pleased to offer any general advice we can, along with recommended settings.  In particular, if you look throuhg this thread as well as others in this section, these discussions are usually pretty lively and full of helpful suggestions, even if they are sometimes not always successful at providing satisfactory solutions.

In the case of 3rd party hardware as well as unsupported operating systems, your starting point should really be the support offered for these by the suppliers, be they Google/Android or a particular device manufacturer, rather than depending on us to know all about hardware/software we don't supply.

Oldwolf - whilst I understand and appreciate what you say, we never require any apologies from our customers for needing help with any of their broadband/email/telephony problems.

My daughter's device ( archos 10i ) only has android 2.2 froyo but have been trying for ages to get email sending.  Eventually got it working with following outgoing server settings on K9.  May be of use to other archos users.

mail server  -   mail.btconnect.com

security type  -  none

port   -   25

require sign in -   ticked

aunthentication type  -  plain

user name   -   xxxxx.xxxx@btconnect.com

password   -   xxxxx

I have an NTSPC Tablet with ICS on it. I had difficulty getting BTCOnnect password on, b ut here is what has worked for me:

incoming - pop3.btconnect. port 110, security NONE.

outgoing - mail.btconnect.com, port 25, security NONE and unticked 'require sign in'.

My thanks to comments here that helped me persevere.
