i cant believe what ive just been told by BT.

If you have a single static IP, you can use it as an external address.
If you have multple static IPs they must all be internal
Is it just me or is that crazy and wrong?
After probably 10 years of using one of the 8 static IPs as an external ip address, im now told all multiple static IP address are for internal use only (ie assigning to a PC)
BT are blaming my issues (after they upgraded me to ADSL2+ from ADSL2) on this, and saying that i will have to get a single static IP account instead.

I'm sorry to read you are experiencing issues with your Static IP's.
I am not sure if I have picked up your enquiry right, but I am sure other people on the board will correct me if I'm wrong. Are you looking to have your IP's as NO NAT but at present they are set as NAT on the router?
The dynamic IP address assigned with No NAT acts as a carrier address for connection to the Internet. Once connected, the static addresses ensure permanent addresses for the computers they are assigned to on the Internet.
The Technical Team should be able to help you further with this.

We have a block of public static IPs ending in 0-7 from BT
0 is reserved for BT network
1-5 is for our use
6 is for the router
7 probably reserved also
We have been using these IPs fine for 4 years, and before that, a similar setup in another office for 10 years.
We use 1 to 5 for Firewalls, hosting webmail
when i do a whatismyip.com from my PC it comes up with IP 1 of the static list, which is our firewall.
Bt swap us from ADSL2 to ADSL2+ and then things dont work so well.
BT faults insist these IP addresses are for internal use only, and based on that they will not look at out uploading problem. And if we want an external IP we should be using a single static IP, not a range of static IPs. I find that unbelievable as an answer.
The problem being high ping speeds (measured from the routers Tracerouter) and dropouts if i upload a file, causing very slow internet access if a file is uploaded. Which is wrong and a fault somewhere.

To the OP: What router do you use ?
It is very easy to accomplish what you want to do with a cisco 857/877 or the likes.
You simply unnumber the layer 2 ports (As the vlan, as the 857/877 have layer 2 ports) against the dialer interface, and assign the IP you were given as the hub address to this interface.
You then use this device as your default gateway on your network. I would recommend using a firewall behind this to handle all your NATs. I would generally use checkpoint FW-1 or Fortigate as we resell both.
I have used this setup successfully for about 5 years, and it still works even on the infinity service.
We use Draytec Vigor 2800, but im also doing test with the BT Business router (new)
and whenever i upload something these are typical tracert results, direct from the router, no LAN attached
Its very bad, and BT so far dont know an answer. I am doing some more tests this weekend using a test account.
BT havent been very good at fixing my problem as this has been on going since July 2010.
