I am wanting to connect a Sonicwall Firewall solution to a BT broadband ADSL router, I understand that the BT will have to be in bridge mode, if the BT router is "transparent" how and where does it get its IP addresses and how does the authentication work between the BT Router and the "cloud".

There's a couple of ways to do this. You can either connect the SonicWall via DHCP and set it to DMZ+ mode in the firewall settings of the BT router, this will forward all traffic including the public IP directly through to the router. Or you could set up bridge mode as you say, the SonicWall will need to be configured to dial the PPPoE session using the modem portion of the BT router and the SW it self will obtain the IP address.
