FTP AND STATIC IP

Hello

I have a BT business silver and black hub. Attached to it via ethernet connection a Dlink box that I have set up as an FTP with a fixed IP address (192.168........)

Inside the office it works fine.

Outside the office it worked fine when using the external IP address (86.148........)

Today it does not work fine. The external IP of the router has changed.  (86.154........)

If I use the router new external IP address everything is fine.

What can I do so that the external IP address remiains the same so that I do not have to advise colleagues who work outside the office that the ftp address has changed?

We are a small company and I am not an IT specialist!

I have logged on the hub and can see the option to add a Public IP address.... not sure this is what I ned to do nor how.

Any guidance most welcome

Anton

Thanks in advance

order a static ip address from BT

it costs extra but it means the ip never changes. it will belong to you and you wont need to change any settings

just reboot the router once it is purchased

Thanks. I thought that might be the case..... but just in case I could save some company money.... I had to ask!!!!

The BT section on static IP is quite limited. It offers options but I can find no explanations as to what the options do!

In your case I believe you just want a single static IP address, this will be assigned to the router's external connection. If you log in to your broadband account on http://myoffice.bt.com/ and click on Manage Services, then look for Connection Settings, you can see the options and process the upgrade from there.

Hi

The IP addressing options allow you to select how many Static and dynamic IP addresses you have as part of your service. This Help & Support article will tell you 'what is the difference between static and dynamic IP addresses' and how you might use them.

If you come up against any future network issues, these User Guides and Office Network Guide should help.

Thanks for repeating marc. you have just needlessly increased the forum database size by 5kb for that reiteration

How did you setup your FTP connection? on the router or modem? I am trying to do the exact same thing with my office. If you do not wish to pay for a static IP, you may use www.dyndnc.com which allows you to create a hostname for example antoine@dyndns.net which you can connect with. This will remain constant and a little peice of software you install on a computer within the network updates this hostname to point to the current WAN IP addresss. Initially you may have to entre card details for a 14day free trial, but then if you cancel your account, you may keep one DNS address (host name) still active... So basically you only have to pay if you want more than one name...

Thanks
