Just wondered If this is possible...
My brother has a domain and hosting with BT.
Is it possible to put my site on his host and then point a new domain towards it.
Well I know I can put my site In a folder of its own on his host and access it fine but is there a way to have a domain name pointed to it without affecting the root site.
Basically having two sites on one hosting package so I don't have to pay for lots of hosting space that I don't need as my site will also be a trial interest.
I got my site on virginmedia freespace(being my isp) at the moment for testing purposes.
Thanks,
Davo
Hi Davo,
That is how a websplit works for URL forwarding, if you do not want your brothers domain/folder showing you would need to get it changed to frame forwarding.

Hi Mark
wouldn't links show the wrong url or bookmarks etc be wrong?
This is why i asked if it was possible, I've used forwarding and frames in the past but it still refers to the root folder.
Dave
Hi Davo,
With URL forwarding it will show the router folder, so your brother domain/folder, with Frame forwarding it will only show your domain.
But with frame forwarding if someone clicks sat "contact us" on your site and bookmarks it, it wont bookmark the contact us page just the home page because the address in the tool bar does not change to show what page you are on.

Hi Mark
Ok thats no good, so it's not possible then.
I know about forwarding and frames I can change that in the domain manager anyway but wanted to know If a domain name can be set to a new root folder on a host.
Dave
Hi Davo,
there is only 1 root folder for each hosting pack, by the sound of what you are looking to do, you need to have your own hosting pack.
Mark
Hi Mark,
yep thats what I thought to start with. I should know better really
I'm amused that I waited 2 days for someone to put in a forward url in domain manager to a subfolder I'd already created and was using.
Frames wouldn't work with my php scripts and cookies so I cannot use that method.
Websplit just sounds more Interesting than subfolder
thanks,
Dave
Hi Mark,
well I tried to change from url to frame in settings area and I get Zone Overwrite failed
and going to Advanced Domain Manager nothing is there all type entries say "none"
It all seems very buggy

wish I'd seen this post before going any further:
Web splitting is no longer available and hasn't been since around 2007 when BT moved to the current hosting platform. Not sure why there is still a form for web splitting, but it is definately not an option any more.
now I need it all fixing and to take out hosting
