I Have a Question... *Upload Speeds

Shiv_Patel

Just wondering...What is the maximum upload speed I can get on my line? I was told I could get upto 2MBPS on a business line, as the residential lines were capped (I was told this by BT Staff). Yet my upload speed seems to remain at 880KBS... On my residential line i got 940kbs! Anyway I was told to wait 10 days.. But I have a feeling this wont change the upload sync speed... I need 1.5MBPS Minimum... Is this possible?

Hi,

I don't know why you were told that Business has 2 meg upload.  It's based mainly on the ADSL package, not the provider.

Here's the skinny with uploads:

Legacy ADSL (up to 2 Mb fixed rate): 256 Kb

ADSL Max (up to 8 Mb): 448 Kb

Business Network package on ADSL Max: 884 Kb (No I don't know what they do to make that work)

ADSL2+ (up to 20 Mb): Generally about 1 Mb officially, but can go up to about 1.2 Mb if you're lucky

The only way you can get more is to get 2 Mb SDSL, or Fibre to the Cabinet/Premises.

Check http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/, and if fibre is listed then away you go to whatever Sales team you want to spend your money with.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

Absolute rubbish ... there is no ADSL protocol that will offer 2.5MBPS or 20Mbps upload speed.

BT 21CN LINE (which I have checked, my exchange does support it) has the Annex M ( the variation of the ADSL2+ standard). Which would support upto 2.5 MPBS by sacrificing download speeds. So..... Obviously 02, who use BT lines, use this for their service.

Just to add I have ADSL2+ available not ADSL at my exchange

Annex M will support up to 3.3 Mbps which is well short of the 2MBPS you are claiming they are telling you.

Go and order it... then do a speed test and see exactly what you get.  It certainly will not be 2.5MBPS but way less.

Also make sure that when doing the test, there should be no active downloads.

Hi,

Also Annex M is not the same thing as standard ADSL.

Annex M was recently introduced on the network by BT Wholesale, and what it does is sacrifice some of your download capacity for upload.

It is, however, up to retail providers to decide whether they supply it.

I don't think any of the BT ISPs do so yet, although they probably will at some point.

Oh, and just in case anyone is slightly confused by some of the earlier posts in this thread, if you use a lower case 'b' when referring to kilo, mega, etc. (Kb, Mb, Gb) you are using bits, and if it's a capital 'B' then it's bytes (KB, MB, GB).

Generally speed is referred to in bits, and download/upload sizes use bytes.  Multiply or divide by 8 as applicable.

Cheers.
