Hi,

There are two main options here: Ethernet and wireless.

Ethernet means running a cable over the 40 feet, which is perfectly doable, but does mean you would have to make sure it was protected.

Wireless should in theory reach that far, unless there are really thick walls and you can't get line of sight on the router.  Some form of wireless booster should fix any issues there though.

You could also consider powerline adapters, but that would involve the second property being on the same ring main, which is probably unlikely, but might be worth a try if you can find someone with a spare set (check if anyone you know has BT Vision, as you get a set as part of the package I think).

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

As OldWolf suggests, use Ethernet with Cat5e cabling.      External grade Cat5e pin to the wall or get the armoured version and bury in plastic conduit.     Easiest and most reliable way.

40 feet from home? I am not sure if you will still get the same Internet speed if you are that far. Is it that possible?

LAN transfer speed may be slowed slightly, but will still be faster than what's coming down a DSL line.

With Ethernet I would expect a full 100Mbps without question.   If Gbit, 40 feet should nbpt present any issues either although PC capability may slow it down to 600-700Mbps.   Remember, Ethernet is spec'd to 400 feet.
