Netgear Router and Static IP's

Hello Forum, first time user here.

We have a number of sites on BT ADSL on which we use Netgear DG834 wired routers. We find that they intermittently lock up every 1-2 weeks, no internet access is available even though the router lights stay green. Only a power cycle will get them to work. All sites are on different exchanges.

Each site has a static IP and 5 extra IP addresses. However, when visiting a site today I found the following:

The Netgear router states:

----------

Router Status

Account Name

Firmware Version  V5.01.16

ADSL Port

MAC Address  00:26:F2:50:xx:xx

IP Address  81.134.xxx.xxx

Network Type  PPPoA

IP Subnet Mask  255.255.255.255

Gateway IP Address 81.134.xxx.xxx

Domain Name Server  194.74.xxx.xxx

194.72.xxx.xxx

LAN Port

MAC Address  00:26:F2:50:B0:42

IP Address  217.37.xxx.xxx

DHCP  Off

IP Subnet Mask  255.255.255.248

Modem

ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023b.d20e

Modem Status Connected

DownStream Connection Speed 10629 kbps

UpStream Connection Speed 1200 kbps

VPI 0

VCI 38

---------

Our IP address range from the welcome pack is:

You’ve ordered a range of Static IP addresses, which contains 8 addresses from 217.37.xxx.xxx to 217.37.xxx.xxx. Three of these are reserved: network address: 217.37.xxx.xxx router/Hub address: 217.37.xxx.xxx subnet mask address if you have 5 Static IP addresses: 255.255.255.248

As you can see from the ‘ADSL Port’ on the Netgear Router the IP address begins 81.134 which is not in our range, is this correct?

Is anyone else experiencing this intermittant locking up issue?

Many thanks

Keith

Are you familiar with the 81.134 subnet?  You might want to check if this is assgined through DHCP or not. Is the ADSL facing the LAN or WAN side? there might be another DHCP server somewhere if the IP was through DHCP.

Your routers WAN port will always obtain a dynamic IP, this is normal. To get proper routing over your static IP's you need to disable NAT on the WAN port. Even though the router has a dynamic IP, the machines assigned with an IP within your range will route properly over their own IP when NAT is disabled.

Thanks a-hill, this is the case.

It does not explain our multi-site, once per two week lockouts that we are getting though. Any ideas?

Thanks
