Overall ESW Site Title appearing at the start of individual page <Title> Meta tags

I've recently been to two "Business for London" Search Engine Optimisation workshops and learned the vital importance of the <title> meta tag for the main search engines. When I viewed the source code in my own website I was horrified to find that the title of each page began with my company name. I assume that this is because it is what I entered as the "Site Title" in ESW. I have been playing with ESW but cannot find how to control my <title> meta tags. I can control the <body> in the Edit HTML facility, but cannot find where to edit the <head>.

Can anyone tell me how to edit the <head> so that I can have appropriate different titles on each page of my website please?

Hello

In Easy site wizard you go to "menu editor " and once there go to the "manage pages"  at the bottom go to "edit page properties" and you can go to "page title" The page title should be related and relevant to your page content. The page title appears on top of your browser and is a significant element in the search engine with regards to rankings. Also go to "Page Keywords" Please enter several keywords that you would like your page to be found by. These keywords can also be phrases containing words found on your main site as well as on this newly created page. Please make sure that the keywords chosen are to be found in your page content as these keywords will be used by search engines to find your page.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I did all that you suggest when I created the webpages.

The query I have is that when I view the source code (by opening the site on the web through Google, right-clicking and selecting "View Source") the meta tag displays the "Site Title" as part of and immediately in front of the "page title" that I entered into the Page Properties - Page Title box.

For example, when creating the page http://www.alcuinlanguages.com/Easy_to_use_language_course_for_leisure_pleasure_and_fun_2010.html , the page title I chose and entered into the dialogue box was

Language Courses for Leisure, Pleasure, Fun | Alcuin Languages

but when I view the source code I see

<title>ALCUIN LANGUAGES Language Courses for Leisure, Pleasure, Fun | Alcuin Languages</title>

ALCUIN LANGUAGES is the "site title" I chose when creating the website, in the very first dialogue box, above "tagline".

I have discovered that ALCUIN LANGUAGES is at the start of every webpage I have created in ESW, even though I have not inserted it into the "Page title" dialogue box.

There are two ways around this and only one I really recommend. The best solution is to have the "site title" be something that applies universally, like "Alcuin Languages" for example, that way the search engines will be able to locate any of your pages if someone by chance searches for your domain name specifically.

The second would be to edit the source code of the pages after publishing through the file manager or FTP. The only reason I don't recommend it is that coding can be very tricky and can cause you to lose content on the live site or content on the editor. If you change anything be sure it is only the content between the <title> tags, anything else you need to change can and should be done in the "edit HTML" tool through Easy Site Wizard. I would also suggest keeping a backup of any pages you change, just in case. Creating a copy can also be done in the File Manager.

If you did choose to edit the code directly you would need to do so everytime you published, so if you publish frequently this may not be a viable option either way. Needless to say I would lean on the first option unless you're confident in your technical knowledge.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks very much for the reply. Well, I certainly don't want to have to change it every time I re-post, that's just something else to forget and have go wrong. Also, I can't find the <head> in the Edit Html box in ESW, so that makes it difficult anyway!

I'm assuming this is a problem with ESW. I've been toying with the idea of re-doing the site in WordPress, but I'm a bit daunted by all the ftp uploads and SQL databases that seem to be required. I'm trying to run a business here, not become the world's greatest web developer.

I have to say it's really irritating. However, I'll take your advice and use a generic site title, unless anyone else has any more ideas.
