Phone Lines and Drop Wires...

GeneralGeek

Hi all,

Quick question:

How many lines can be provisioned over a normal drop wire?  I only ask, as I support a business that only has a drop wire into their building.

They currently run three lines into the building (one ADSL, one Fax and an Alarm) line and we have been advised in the past that the drop wire is now maxed out.  My belief is that each line takes 2 pairs, and there are 6 pairs in a drop wire cable - is that correct?

The building used to be one of two buildings (of which the first building provided all comms) but the two buildings are now leased separately and adding lines into the building has been a struggle.

I'm now trying to consolidate comms in the building and I want to make sure that what we were originally advised about the drop wire is indeed true.

Any advice is greatly welcomed, many thanks.

Chris

Each line uses 1 pair of wires. Standard drop wire used to be 2 pair but 3 pair is also available now.

But, having a single wire for each connection works a better performance than connections with multiple wirings..

What?

Gobbledegook!   Rubbish!  or just posting for the sake of it?

Why not just post on things you know about?    Which seems to be very little in the field of telecomms.
