I use some Flight Planning software which is based on Microsoft Silverlight. This worked fine until recently, but suddenly stopped downloading maps, giving an error. This has also happened to a few other users recently and we are highly suspicious of the cause being a forced firmware upgrade to our BT2700/2701 hubs.
All hubs are now running the infamous version 6.3.9.63-plus.tm firmware!
Use of the applicaton is successfull when I switch to my old Sky Broadband link with Netgear, so it's not the PC environment at fault.
I'd appreciate some help testing our theory - can a few forum members with these hubs and firmware try running the app and report back? And also members with the same hub and different firmware?
You will need Windows + Silverlight installed. Browse to http://www.skydemonlight.com Accept the agreement, and an aeronautical chart should begin to download (4.5MB). If successful the map will display in your browser.
Our problem is that the download fails - the data downloaded is incomplete. A couple of different error messages appear depending on the browser you use.
If our theory is upheld then can anyone suggest an easy fix? Settings on the hub? (I read other entries about firmware-related problems being solved by obtaining an alternative hub with older firmware). Otherwise I guess this has to be reported to BT, but I can believe a firmware change will not happen in a hurry.
Thanks for any help/advice.
Hi. It would be better if you can post the error message here. We can probably help you with this. The error you are getting is when downloading the software you want to use and I dont think this is related to Silverlight.
When at the SkyDemon page you see a "Downloading Chart..." in-page dialog with spinning logo and saying 4,355kb [or other] out of 4,935kb received. It pauses in this state for a while (5.5 minutes) before giving an in-page error dialog:
An Error was Encountered
The size of the downloaded file is 5053651 when it should be 5054348. Check that you do not have a firewall or similar service intercepting internet communications.
I get this with FFox and Chrome too (although strictly my versions are not supported with Silverlight 5). IE8 is though.
This behaviour is fairly consistent now that I updated to Silverlight 5, although the amount showing downloaded is not always the same. With Silverlight 4, the same occured with IE 8 (although I don't think the wait was so long). With FFox and Chrome a different error occured after the download wait, citing a URL to a Silverlight Developer site.
The Silverlight cache for this site is being purged during tests.
The error message is shown as a screenshot here - http://www.skydemon.aero/forums/Topic4778.aspx together with more discussion.
Given that I've tried to download the map on two computers and three browsers on each computer, and failed every time, suspicion must fall on the BT router which is common to both. One can assume it isn't a Silverlight problem, at least not directly, since the download works elsewhere without a problem.
I ran Wireshark and then tried to download the map. The resulting log, in text format, is here -

- for anyone who might be able to see anything in it that would help.
