Reliably settiong up port forwarding on the BT Business Hub 3

Hi,

 

I've been searching extensively for an answer to this problem for some time to no avail, so I thought I'd see if anyone on these forums has run into this problem.

 

We cussently have one public static IP in the office, assigned to the router. I have set up port forwarding using the normal steps described on the BT website, and assigned 'SSH Server - Secure Shell' (an automatically set up application in the routers firewall rules) to a local ubuntu server.

 

However when I attempt to ssh in using the correct user name and our public static IP, I get a password prompt but when I enter the correct password it gives me a 'permission denied' message.

 

I'm new to port forwarding, and as far as I can tell it's set up correctly, though I don't know if there's another way to check if the port forward is set up correctly than juct checking the router's admin console.

 

Help and advice would be much appreciated,

If you are getting through to the point where it's asking for your username and password then it's likely that your port forwarding is getting through and you have an sshd config error.

 

The way to check is to look at /var/log/auth.log and if it's throwing error messages and passwords or usernames (or anything really at the same time you are trying to log in) then it's your sshd config that's at fault.

You can check if the port is open using this site - http://www.ping.eu/port-chk/ . If you need help opening ports on a BT hub contact us  and they will be glad to help. If you need help with a third party router call 0800 500 247 and they will be pleased to assist as well.
