Speed Concerns

Hi all!

I'm with BT Business Total Broadband ADSL2+ MAX. Now I had my line installed and all set up Wednesday 15th November. I'm using my own router (TD-W8960DN router 300Mbps).

Now considering it was a new line and stuff I gave it ten days and those days are now up. I've been using Line Checkers (like virgin) and they show this: Virgin Media Line Check (Having to use these as it doesn't like me attaching pictures)

Now if you compare it with this: Speedtest.net

you can see why i'm a tiny bit confused.

Now I did have to restart the router of mine 3 times. One was to set some other things up (like Port Forwarding), I updated the firmware so that needed a restart and i also had to restart it as it died on me!

Another thing that made me wonder what on earth was going on is the following image: Showing I live in the US NOT the UK

this is from a game called "Left 4 Dead 2". Some people on their servers like to get nosey and see where people come from. Apparently i'm from the US and not the UK.

Could someone just give me some clarity on a few things?

  1. When should my speeds increase?
  2. When will this be changed from me apparently being in the US to the UK?

I'd just appriciate some light being shed on the situation, thats all :).

Kind Regards!

Hi,

Certainly looks odd, but you've left out some important info.

First off what is the URL for the Virgin checker?  Is it an actual speed tester, or is it an availability checker?  What does the BT Wholesale Availability Checker say?  (http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome)

If you have a BT line you can PM me the phone number and I can check what the length of it is.  If availbility says one thing and the speed check says something else then I think you have a technical issue.  I think that'll be the Helpdesk for you then.

As far as being in the US is concerned it depends on what the server reading the IP address thinks.  If you're on a dynamic IP these are often unmarked, so may throw location based services off kilter.  Most of these services are also US-centric, and if they don't know where you are they'll just chuck you in the States.

Hi DaveA,

It was the speed checker. I've recently had issues with my broadband connection and BT themselves are now involved in the loop to.

My line i'm told is still in the stabalisation period.

The results from that link you sent me are as follows:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 7Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 6Mbps and 8Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL2+ broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 13Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 7.5Mbps and 17Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1Mbps and downstream line speed of 13Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 7.5Mbps and 17Mbps.

I will also PM you my phone number.
