Speed issues when using Static IP

OK Guys here is an interesting one for you - probably never been seen before.

I get terrible broadband speed when using my Static IP but as soon as I get rid of my credentials and use the generic home hub credentials which switches me to a Dynamic IP my speed literally goes up 1000x. I initially thought this might be to do with the IP profile, however, the bt speed test website says my profile is 14-15mbps on either Dynamic or Static IP. I did leave the Static IP alone for 2 weeks (as i thought the profile should be clear by then) but the speed was still terrible when i returned.

I am completely stumped, currently BT Customer Services are convinced that the Static IP speed hasn't synchronised correctly and have asked me to switch to the Static IP for 72 hours. I can't do this as it would mean I lose 72 hours of business productivity. This has left me somewhat at a dead end :smileyfrustrated:

Can anybody help?!

Kind Regards,

I've only ever seen rare issues of this where another user has been assigned your IP. 9x out of 10x if there's duplicate IP assignment then 1 user would get no web, but rare occasions I've seen both connected and 1 just gets really poor throughput. The quickest test we do for this is to ping the IP, if it responds then turn the router off and ping again... if it still responds then it's a duplicate IP. If there's no response either time them probably best to call to see if the helpdesk can get a duplicate login check done.

That is some great advice thanks - i think if we cant get this resolved easily we will just get the IP changed, we have no dependencies on it, other than a DNS entry we can change. So this might be the easiest solution.

I have also seen a post by somebody who was under attack, which sounds far fetched but getting the address changed would probably solve that too.

I ran an nmap port scan and it does seem to think the host is up but we arent using the IP. It isn't however responding to pings so this could be a false positive.

To be fair the guy at the call centre talking to me right now is a legend, he has been talking to me for nearly 1 hour and is really pushing to get this resolved. Thanks!

It might be possible that more than one users are using your static IP. This is probably be the cause of the slow down on your connection.
