Static IPs Have Stopped Working

aguk1

I'm a new customer with BT and I have a batch of 5 static IPs and a 2-wire router.  My web server was configured with a static IP to get my basic services running while I configure my other servers.  Everything was working fine (router was connecting with a dynamic public IP but static IP range was configured as per the instructions and a static was assigned to the web server, which was then serving traffic).  One evening last week the static IP range stopped working.  I checked the server and it was not able to retrieve web pages from the internet but all devices on my local IP range were fine, so the connection was okay.

I re-checked the config of the static IPs and ports, even though the problem occurred while nobody was in the office, and everything was as it should be.  In the interests of simplifying the issue, I reconfigured my web server to a local IP and got local browsing back but of course no web traffic to the server component.  The static IP of the router doesn't appear to be responding either.  I have configured port forwarding and opened up a PPTP service to easily test the issue, which has been configured to use the router's default addresses.

Connecting through the router's dynamic public IP connects fine (proving port forwarding and internet connection) but using the router's static IP fails to connect, suggesting a mapping issue to my static IPs.  My router is configured as per the documentation and it has been rebooted several times so I'm convinced the issue is not local to my network.

I contacted BT late last week by phone (after being dropped from the chat queue twice after finally getting to position 1 (I'm guessing they didn't like the look of the problem type)) but by the time I'd jumped through all the hoops of checking my connection settings etc, the second line team had gone home for the weekend.  A support ticket was raised but I still haven't had a resolution or even been contacted about this other than to tell me that there aren't any other users reporting this sort of problem so it must be a problem with my config.

We're now into Wednesday and my workaround of pointing my DNS addresses to the dynamic public IP of my router (which changes it's address at least once a day) is getting ridiculous and is losing me business.  It sounds like there are some very competent moderators on this forum so I'm asking for one to please pick up my fault and see what can be done, even if it's scrubbing my IP range and giving me a new range.  Anything to give me a stable service and get my web server back online so I can get on with building the rest of my network.

2700s DHCP is on.  No other DHCP server running.  I'll perform a factory reset and take it from there.  Thanks for checking the routing.  I'll let you know how the factory reset goes.

Okay, I've reset the router to factory defaults and plugged in all the relevant information.  The problem persists unfortunately.  Everything works on dynamic IPs but nothing still on statics.  I've tried using NAT on the server and using the routers default IP as well as reconfiguring the server to use a dedicated static IP and still no joy.

I'm afraid that apart from replacing the 2700 (incase it has some form of fault) then you have done all you can and will have to speak to BT tech support (good luck)

I suspect they will send you a new router as the tracert to peer and static ip routes to the same destination.

only other thing it can be is the possibility of 2 BB lines in the same area for your company are using the same username and password. i dont think thats it though.

i myself at this point would be looking at a replacement router just in case but you will need to see what BT say

Hi

Thanks for all your help with this Alastair, I would have to agree that i think you have exhasted all avenues that could be followed on the forum.

Aguk1, I have sent you a private mail about this case.

Kind Regards

Hello,

Just registered to say that I seem to have an almost identical issue.

On Monday evening my connection from home to the office dropped, late at night when nobody could have been around to alter anything.

I've spent most of my time since then trying to work out why my router will no longer forward traffic, and have eventually discovered as above that it works with the underlying dynamic address, but absolutely not with the static address I've been using for the last 6 years.

I haven't tried a full factory reset -  surely this shouldn't be necessary. I wonder if something changed somewhere to cause this issue?

I also have a BT 2700hgv using the version 6 firmware.

Any information or suggestions gratefully received, thank you

I have the same issue as well, started about two weeks ago. Other symptoms I've noticed are:

1. The broadband speed has decreased significantly

2. If you look under the firewall section you will see that the server you've allocated the public static IP address to is noted along with it's applications you've pinholed BUT the public address on the right is set to the WAN IP address.

All very wierd.

Anyone from BT on this forum ?

I'm sorry to hear that others are having the same problem but at least it does go some way to reinforcing the fact that it's not a config issue with my router.

I have had a replacement router sent out after a factory reset failed to fix the problem.  The issue is still present.  I'm starting to give up that this problem is going to get solved and I'm now starting to look at alternative ISPs.

I am in contact with two BT teams: one thinks it's a router config issue, the other thinks it's a hardware issue at BT.  They are passing me between each other while I sit in the middle losing bunsiness through my loss of static IP use.  Comically, BT sent out a telecoms engineer to test for line noise on my phone line yesterday to try to identify the problem.  Somebody's clutching at straws.

Is anyone else still having the problem?

I gave up with the BT 2700 router which consistently refused to save my settings and have bought a Draytek Vigor 2820n. Best move I've ever made -  it's a superb bit of kit which does far more than any other ADSL router modem I've used.

I told it my static IP and it connected immediately and has held it flawlessly for the 10 days I've had it.

Now hoping I get authorisation to buy another for our satellite office....Smiley Happy

Well, well - someone having the same problem as me. I spent 2hrs on the phone last night to a BT tech support guy called Graham. We run an FTP server on one of the 5 static IP's we pay for (providing software to our clients) that was working fine until one night last week when all of a sudden it disappeared from sight. The idea of replacing the router doesn't hold out any hope as we have several and many 2700's here and they all return the same problem even after a full factory reset. The BT tech guy gave up last night but has promised that someone will call me on Monday to try and resolve the issue. I live in hope. I'll let you all know what transpires.
