Strange happenings with domain name

kittyandpolly

Hi,

I have come across something today which also happened a few weeks back which I had put down to a one-off. If you do a search on Google for my shop, either Kitty and Polly or kittyandpolly it comes back with my shop as the first result but as the second search result shows a completely different shop (Visit Bath) which also uses e-pages.

As I say this has happened twice in the last month and I would really love to know why this has started happening and what is being done to prevent it happening again.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Polly

Hi, I'd be really grateful if someone from the BT -epages team could get back to me on this, as this is really starting to concern me . I have just done a search on Google for www.kittyandpolly.co.uk and it now brings back 2 other shops that use e-pages - Visit Bath online shop and www.sciencesleuth.co.uk

Is there some sort of server issue here as this happened middle of August as well ?

Sorry folks if I keep banging on about this but I think there is a real issue here .

I have checked a number of e-shops that I have across on the forum and when I check them on Google, they all come with other e-shops as the first two results

eg search for www.milkbug.co.uk and it brings back www.sciencesleuth.co.uk and www.visitbathshop.co.uk

eg search for www.peruvianknitwear.co.uk and it brings back the same two sites

eg search for www.kittyandpolly.co.uk and same result

I asked the question on the Google Webmaster forum and they seem to think it's some sort of server/DNS issue.

Any ideas ?

Paula

It is only Google that is having this problem. I don't see it on Bing or Yahoo.

Thanks Dave,

Appreciate it might only be Google but since that's where I get most of my traffic from, it has an immediate impact.

I no longer appear in the natural search results where I should be , one of these e-pages shops appears there instead !

Polly

 Hello Polly

right now we do not know why this is happening, but we will investigate. Unfortunatly we can not give you an answer right now.

But we are working on it.

Hi Paula,

We think we've got to the bottom of this, it appears to be as you suggest that something went wrong in the DNS pointing the wrong "Vanity URL" to the wrong shops. So www.kittyandpolly.co.uk for example was pointing at the shop for www.visitbathshop.co.uk this would explain the confused search results.

The issue has now been resolved from what we can see, unfortunately it means it may take a few weeks for Google to rectify the correct links and descriptions. I would advise that if you use Google Webmaster Tools that you resubmit your website as this may fix things sooner.

Hi there,

Thank you for this.  I was beginning to think I was losing my marbles on this one, but came across another contact here who is having the same problem. I hope as you say, this will finally fix the problem but I'll continue to monitor over the next few months just to be sure.

Thank you for taking the time to look at the problem.

Kind Regards,

Paula

Hi there

can you explain whether this issue you have found and rectified also apply to milkbug.co.uk as Kitty and Polly have mentioned above? I used to rank postion 1 for a few keywords and then nowhere to be seen and then I was back and now nowhere to be seen again! As I get most if not all my traffic from google - I would appreciate a response from you.

Thanks

Hi Milkbug,

Hopefully the e-Shop team will get back to you on this.

All I can tell you is that if this issue happens again with my e-shop, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

I appreciate that BT may now have fixed the issue but for it to have happened in the first place is frankly unbelievable. The only consolation I have had is that at least I got an answer on this forum.  Using the helpdesk number was a waste of time !

Regards,

Paula
