Website online but failing any ping test - can anyone help?

Hi, relatively new to this sort of thing but we've started looking at some seo for our website .  I've noticed that our website is failing any form of ping test. The only reason I can find for this on Google is that the website your are pinging is offline, but our website is definitely online. Please could someone explain to me in layman terms if there is anything I can do or if this is normal? Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi VPH. Check "ICMP" on your server. Some server's have this disabled by default. ICMP is the protocol resposible for pinging a node.

What OS are you using for this?Smiley Happy

Hi there nikkil, thank you for your quick reply!

Just looked into this and the nearest thing I can find would be the 'Stealth Mode' option in the BT Router. Would this be the option that I need to change? The 'Block Ping' option is already unchecked.

As for OS, we're currently using Windows Vista Version 6 SP 2. I have also tried pinging our site from various Websites.

Hi Vph,

The domain is hosted on our servers which block any ping requests.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ian1974, thanks for getting back to me regarding this.

Relatively new to this, but we've recently started working on some SEO for our site and we noticed that all other 'competitors' in the area are able to get their website pinged. I was wondering if you'd know if this would have any effect on SERP's or Linkbacks? If to your knowledge it does, is there any way of getting the block removed per site?

No problem if not, purely curious 🙂

Hi Vph,

This will not have any affect on your Seo.

I have checked and your search rankings appear to be quite good already (2nd page in Google using - hotel barrow in furness and 1st page on bing and Yahoo.

However we are unable to remove the block.

On another note please can you contact myself via the dns enquiry form via www.dnsforms.co.uk regarding your domain, nothing to worry about we just need to update some details.

Kind Regards,

This is totally firewall issue. If your server firewall on then you can't ping. So desable the firewall, its may help.
