two different answers!

MikeRichardson

Background. Rugby Club introducing broadband into clubhouse. Considering making wireless broadband available to members. Offered package by BT wioth 10GB download limit each month

Problem: If members use our wireless network then all usage comes off our limit - that i understand. Have spoken to three BT advisers and got two different answers. Two have said that if I create a wi-fi hotspot then usage of the hot spot does not come out of our allowance. the third says yes it does. Which is correct?

I also asked whether usage of the hot spot costs our members anything. Was told by all three that it doesn't yet the BT website says that usage of hot spots is chargeable! What is the correct answer?

Anyone help?

Hi,

Usage that goes through your normal wireless = counts towards your usage.

Usage that goes through BT Wifi/BT Openzone = doesn't count towards your usage.

There a couple of other things to bear in mind about letting people use your normal wireless.  Firstly you need to make sure and secure your router's admin functions with a password, as they'll be able to get into it if you don't.

Secondly you're legally responsible for anything that they do while using your connection, as there is no way of differentiating between your usage and theirs.

Hi again,

Also if you spend an extra £4 plus VAT per month you can get unlimited usage, which is probably a better option if you plan on continuing to use your own wireless.
