Anything that can be done to reclaim money back from BT

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right sub-reddit for this kind of post. Please let me know if it isn't.

I volunteer for a charity and we help people when it comes to food and helping them manage their finances, benefits etc. We recently spoke to a pensioner in his late 80's/90s and he asked us for help to get in touch with BT to see if we could help reduce his bill as he received a letter from BT stating that his bill was going to increase by £10 from next month.

Upon phoning BT we found out that he was paying over £80 pm for a phone line and the lowest broadband speed (10 mbps) that BT was offering. According to the BT rep the reason he was paying soo much was because he was out of contract for the last 5 years. We've managed to negotiate BT down to £40 going forward with a contract.

Now I know people should be on top of their own finances but honestly I find it soo frustrating that when they increase their charges they decide to get in touch but they didn't bother to send him any letters informing him that he could save money by joining a contract. Unfortunately he doesn't have any family around and stuff so he wouldn't really know how much he should be paying for 10 mbps broadband with a phone line.

Is there anything that can be done to recover some money back from BT?

Hi,

You would need to query this with BT Residential on 0800800150 as we can only advise on BT Business accounts.

I can say that if the customer has been out of contract for 5 years any contact about this would have been over 5 years ago in the build up to the end of the term. BT Residential would not be responsible for the contract end  but would normally advise it was happening 6 months and 3 months before the end term.

Thank you

Adam
