Buying back a specific telephone number

My phone provider has disconnected my landline (without my knowledge) and have said that they have released my number back to BT and all my new landline provider has to do is request this from BT. 

It is important that I retain the number, please could you advise how I can get this back?  Thanks

I just wanted to understand a little more about you number. Have you been disconnected and lost your number? Who was your provider and can they not tell you?
