A new day, a new problem: intalling Wordpress onto my website

MarkTobin

I am so sorry. But I'm back.

I know that Wordpress.org is a third party and therefore no support will be offered. But what I'm after is the advice and guidance of someone who has successfully followed these instructions: Codex: Installing Wordpress

On paper it seems relatively straightforward. But the detailed instructions don't tally with what I see in phpMyAdmin.

I think I've created a database called 'Wordpress' - phpMyAdmin certainly tells me that it exists, and when I log into my FTP client I can see it - but I can't seem to access it at all from within phpMyAdmin. Neither does what I can see in phpMyAdmin bear relation to what the Wordpress instructions tell me I should see.

Therefore I can't proceed with any of the instructions Wordpress lays out for creating usernames and passwords and granting privileges.

I sort of guessed that if I couldn't see anything relating to 'privileges' witihn phpMyAdmin it must mean that I have them (why wouldn't why?, I thought). As I couldn't enter specific username/password info for the Wordpress database, I figured that these values must be the same as my generic username and password that I use to access phpMyAdmin.

So I proceeded under that assumption, edited the wp-config.php accordingly, and loaded the Wordpress files to the 'wordpress' database, via FileZilla.

Everything seemd to go tickety-boo, but then when I try to run the install script (which Wordpress tells me should be accessible at www.marktobin.co.uk/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php) I see nothing. I'm just told that the server can't be found.

If anyone has gone through this successfully and is able to offer some plain English help, I would be most grateful.

Even better, if someone wants to pop round, I make a mean cup of tea and will even throw in a bacon sandwich.

1 - try deleting everything and starting again

2 - make the file system on your server insecure - if this works then the problem is security on your server filesystem, nothin to do with wordpress configuration

youll have to rebuild up security afterwards.

3 -  create a new database user specifically for wordpress - then re-install everything

Hi Mark,

Firstly, with regards to www.marktobin.co.uk/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php not being found. For this to work, you would have had to upload all the Wordpress files to a folder called wordpress within your public folder. If you didn't do it exactly like this, you will need to adapt this URL to suit.

With regards to the database stuff, the setup instructions may ask you to create the database through phpMyAdmin. BT does not allow you to do this and you will need to use the database manager tool instead.

Let me know if you need specific help with setting up the users and database, although it is quite straightforward.

Alright, Dave you're a star. DDambrosio, thanks for your help too.

Think I may finally be getting somewhere.

I've deleted everything that I messed up last night. Clean slate time.

I even deleted the database I created and created a brand new one just to be sure.

I'm about to upload the wordpress stuff to my root folder/directory. Think that was one of the myriad mistakes I made yesterday: I  uploaded into the wordpress database I'd created within database manager... that was stupid, right?! I ask, but I don't actually know.

Anyway, before I being my upload I have a simultaneous forum post over at Wordpress.org. I'm just checking with the experts there that I don't foul this one up.

If everything works, I'll be sending cups of tea in the post. I've eaten the bacon sandwich. Sorry.

Almost there...

Dave, your instructions so far have been spot on. Thank you very much. You are indeed a guru.

However, there appears to be one thing that I've still managed to stuff up.

I've now uploaded all the right files and folders to the right place. I can see the wordpress installer at precisely the URL that I want.

However, running the installer, it requests information so the installer can configure 'wp-config.php' correctly.

This is what I'm asked to provide:

"Database Name (the name of the databse you want to run WP in)"

I've entered: wordpress_marktobin_co_uk...

"User Name (your MySQL username)"

I've entered the username that I use throughout the BT Website Centre

"Password (your MySQL password)"

As above, I've just used the password that I use to access all the various controls within the BT Website Centre

"Database Host (you should be able to get this info from your web host, if 'localhost' does not work)"

'Localhost' doesn't appear to work, so I've replaced this with the information I see within my database manager under 'SQL Host Name'.

That's not working though.

Am I doing something wrong? If so, does anyone have any pointers?

Well done Mark, glad to hear it 🙂

Don't forget to backup your database occassionally. I once wrote a guide to automating this if you feel up to the challenge....
