Apple Lion and Xcode downloads (large files) fail

I have recently bought a Mac and found I was unable to download the upgrade to Apple Lion or the Xcode package. These are big fiiles (3GB), but I have an unlimited account, and these downloads would not even start. Are there ther big files that will fail?

I contacted apple who told me it was a fault with the BT router. Is this right? Certainly I found I could download easily using a wifi connection in an apple store with all the same settings, and then using a different broadband connection (not BT) which I enabled simply by changing the default router. So what is going on? Anyone else had the same problem?

We are aware of an issue with the BT Business hub II (IG2701) as supplied to some broadband customers and all Business Infinity users.  Downloads larger than 2GB will not work.

We are due to release a firmware upgrade in late August/Early September which will correct this issue.

Please accept our sincere apologies if you have been affected by this issue.

I understand from Mac forums that if you use the BT Openzone facility, there is no download issue.  I have attempted this by enabling the Openzone facility on my BusinessHub router. Unfortunately the bandwidth is very slow (predicting 8+hours for download) that on both attempts to date I've had timeout errors when 4 0r 5 hours into the download. Perhaps those with a better bandwidth (I only get 1.3Mbs) might be more fortunate.  Seems odd that Openzone users don't get the issue from the same router...

I could hazard a guess or three at why Openzone users may be able to get ultra-large downloads whereas the "owner" of the connection and router cannot but they would only be guesses and around te fact that the outer manages analyses the "owners" connection but an OZ user is "unrestricted" with no firewall, time of day constraints, &c.

However, I too would like to know when te firmware is to be rolled out for the existing routers.     It causes some of my contacts problems too.

James, you stated that the necessary update to solve this problem would be issued in April/September 2011. It is now July 2012 and I cannot download Mountain Lion for exactly the same reason - file is too big 4.3GB.

What and when is the solution for this coming?

Hi davidpar,

We are currently monitoring potential reports where customers are unable to download Mountain Lion for the Mac, we believe the problem is affecting users from all over the world, as such we are advising customers to contact Apple for further support as it is not just BT users with the problem.

I've done some research here. Looks like a server issue from apple. Threads about this are all over in apple.
