BT2700HGV making Server available to internet

msaunders

HI there I have a BT2700HGV router with the following settings

DHCP turned off

Router IP 192.168.1.254

Wireless: WPA2

Broadband IP network: Obtain IP address automatically

DNS: Obtain automatically

I have a block of 5 IP addresses

I have 5 client PCs on the network and 1 Small Business Server 2008 server

The Small Business Server is doing the following:

DHCP

DNS

SharePoint

Active Directory

Exchange 2007

Now all the clients can get out onto the internet but I am having trouble assigning one of my Static IPs to the Server.

When I log into the router and go to Settings > Lan > NAT & Address Allocation I can see the Server entry but when I try to change the Wan IP mapping to one of my public IPs I get the following error

Errors: For the public routed subinterface only wan IP mapping is allowed

When I look further down the list of devices I can see a internal device has a static IP assigned and it accessible from outside the network via port 81

Why cant I assign a static Ip to the Server?

Thanks

OK so I have it working see the diagram below but for some reason when I restart the server I lose internet connectivity and have to run the connect to the internet wizard.

your NIC 1 (internal) is set up wrong.

set it to a different LAN.

maybe 192.168.16.1 as the server address

statically assign the ip like you have with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and a blank default gateway

remember to reconfigure your dhcp scope for this network

make sure RRAS is configured

Thanks for the reply.

Whats wrong with using 192.168.1.x address for the LAN

Will changing this stop the server from losing the internet connection on a restart?

When you say make sure RRAS is configured do you mean run the connect to the internet wizard?

Thanks

I have been reading that small business server 2008 does not support multiple NICs so when I restart it disables a nic.

Would this work.

If I just use one NIC and set it to DHCP but give it a DHCP reservation on the server so it always gets the same IP for example 192.168.16.1.

Would this then allow me to assign a public Ip to the server?

Thanks

you cant use the 192.168.1.x because the other side of the server uses it. the server will not be able to route information from a 192.168.1.x subnet to another of the same since it will either route correctly sometimes and then route to the lan of nic1 at other times.

or

it just wont route out correctly at all

SBS2008 can support more than 1 NIC its just that when you install SBS2008 you cant have more than one nic.

i have used SBS2008 and server 2008 with 2 NICs so it can work.

dont know why when you reboot it disables one. maybe something to do with the config of the ip address situation

RRAS is in the administrative tools. ( Routing and remote access )  go int RRAS and the server name will be on the left.

it will show green or red.

if green its configured.

if red it is not.

even if it is green that does not mean it is configured correctly

no. that wouldnt work.

is there a reason you have 5 static ips?

if you only need one this whole situation could be simplified very much so.

Sorry to be pain but if I wanted to get this to work with just 1 NIC could I do this

thats the physical side yea.

your example means you need to change the router ip to 192.168.16.254

you could with that physical network use 192.168.1.254 and configure the dhcp scope accordingly.

this network is if you have a single static ip rather than 5

OK so I will leave it setup how it is and change the LAN from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.16.x and reconfigure the DHCP scope and make sure RRAS is configured

Like I said with this current setup it works but when I reboot the server it loses the internet

Thanks for your help so far

no problem.

ive not experienced the issue with disabling the card.

i would suspect at first that it may be due to both nics using the same LAN.
