BT2700HGV making Server available to internet

msaunders

HI there I have a BT2700HGV router with the following settings

DHCP turned off

Router IP 192.168.1.254

Wireless: WPA2

Broadband IP network: Obtain IP address automatically

DNS: Obtain automatically

I have a block of 5 IP addresses

I have 5 client PCs on the network and 1 Small Business Server 2008 server

The Small Business Server is doing the following:

DHCP

DNS

SharePoint

Active Directory

Exchange 2007

Now all the clients can get out onto the internet but I am having trouble assigning one of my Static IPs to the Server.

When I log into the router and go to Settings > Lan > NAT & Address Allocation I can see the Server entry but when I try to change the Wan IP mapping to one of my public IPs I get the following error

Errors: For the public routed subinterface only wan IP mapping is allowed

When I look further down the list of devices I can see a internal device has a static IP assigned and it accessible from outside the network via port 81

Why cant I assign a static Ip to the Server?

Thanks

Quick question

Over the weekend I tried this

LAN 192.168.1.x

Router 192.168.2.254

When I went to run the connect to the internet it asked me for the router IP 192.168.2.254 and the server IP 192.168.1.1 but it gave me an error telling me it could not go any further as the router is on a different subnet.

So thats why my lan is 192.168.1.x and the router is 192.168.1.254

ok. it will fail if not set up right.

just to make this whole thing easy to direct you as to what to set up...

are you going to use the 5 static ip setup or change to single static ip?

i think its time to pick one and go with it

We will be needing the block of 5 IPs

then ignore the setup mentioned.

you will need the 2 NIC setup

Ok so what is the exact procedure I need to take to set it up correctly?

Thanks

using the diagram in post number 11

set that up physically but on NIC one use something other than 192.168.1.x

192.168.16.x or 192.168.0.x or whatever

on NIC 1 specify the ip and subnet mask only.

on NIC2 use DHCP from the 2700, it will obtain a 192.168.1.x address.

use the router interface to assign 1 of the 5 ips via DHCP. (this is to make administration much easier)

as long as you use the physical setup in your diagram the fact the 2700 is doing dhcp wont matter.

last job is to have RRAS configured correctly

Thanks for the reply

At the weekend I tried the following

Left DHCP on the server giving out 192.168.1.x addresses

Turn on DHCP on the router and changed the router IP to 192.168.2.254

plugged the 2nic into the router and left the first nic in the switch but for some reason NIC1 Ip changed to 192.168.2.x

dont really see why it would do that.

certainly the setup just mentioned works fine as it has done in other threads.

maybe when doing the setup go into RRAS and disable it then once the other config is done just reconfigure it in there rather than the internet and connection wizard

OK I have never configured RRAS before what would I need to do?

As far as i remember....

right click the server name on the left and choose configure routing and remote access.

it will bring up a setup wizard.

you choose the option forVPN access and NAT (middle circle)

the rest of the wizard will ask for you to say which card faces the internet (NIC2) and i think afterwards you pretty much go next next next through it.

thats as far as i remember. hard to remember without looking at it.

*pictures above are for server 2003 so may differ slightly on 2008*
