I use a CakePHP based CMS software package on my hosting server.
I have several different installations of the same version of this software all running under different directories. The different installations are not connected to each other in any way.
I have had clients logging into and administering their individuals sites through this CMS for the last several years with no issues.
Then, all of a sudden, out of the blue, they are no longer able to login to the sites!! We are able to see the actual sites, but are not able to login to administer them via the CMS.
I would point to this being a problem with the PHP CMS software package I'm using, but the bizarre thing is, as I said, this problem is affecting every single separate installation, each one being in separate directories not related to each other in any way.
