Broadband infinity

Bt now offers 2 Options now for the Infinity connection. In my exchange we are offered under option 1 Download speed 38 Mbps and upload 9.5. Option 2 provides download speed of 56.5 Mbps and upload of 18. Why is option 2 download not double option 1 like it is with the uploads speeds?

Good point. I think they have calculations on the download speeds that they can offer. Most of the time, download is used much often than download. It is possible that it wouldnt be technically/financially practical if the download speed is offered double.

The lesser download speed on option 2 is likely due to the physical limitations of your line.

Hi,

Want the correct answer?

Basically BT recently upgraded their systems, and have now got the capability to increase the speed.  As there are two options they've made the cheaper one the normal speed, and given everyone who paid the extra fiver double the speed and unlimited usage.

Simple as that.  Sod all to do with the previous two answers.

Cheers.

Your answer had nothing to do with the question.

The original poster was asking why he's being offered 40Mb download on option 1 and 56 on option 2 and wondered why option 2 wasn't double speed.

It's true that option 1 is a fixed 40down 10up and option 2 is 80down and 20up due to BT upgrading the network.

BUT the reason he's not getting 80down on option 2 will be due to his line quality, length of the copper line from the street cabinet and how many people are connected to his exchange.

Pretty much as above, however one thing already worth pointing out is that the upload isn't double on Infinity 2, it's just short.

Also, I'd be interested to know if you have either service already? Unlike with the ADSL and ADSL2+ services where customers are informed that they'll get 'up to' 8Mb and 20Mb and end up somewhere short of both, BT seem to be reporting an actual line rate for the customer. No guarntee that you'll get it all the time, however, but it's progress. My point is that if you have the 40/10 package already and you're getting 38 / 9.5, then I'd imagine that you'd get much closer to 80/20 than advertised. A colleague of mine recently went with the residential package and went from 35 to 75 after being quoted 68. The fact is, Fibre-optic or not, the unknown is the copper and no-one knows exaclty how fast the broadband is going to be until it's on.

Hope this helps.
