Desktop Email Program Issues with Office 365 upgrade

I have had to consult this forum over the last two days to try and find a solution as to why, all of a sudden, from 11th December 2012, I could no longer send emails.

There is a lot of conflicting advice by BT and by the MYOFFICE 365.

A lot of settings provided are not accurate at all.  I am hoping by just registering as a member, I can help others who have had the same problem.

If you are using OUTLOOK 2003 or WINDOWS MAIL, you will have to be looking at downloading another email client.

You will need an email client that supports TLS.

By downloading and experimenting with a few email programs, Thunderbird 17 is clever and works, and FREE from MOZILLA.  It actually checks server connections once a new account is added.  It starts to check automatically but you must stop this and select manually configure.

In order to create an account in Thunderbird, please see pictures below

Step 1

Select POP (not IMAP.  Imap not supported by Office 365)

Server Name needs to be:  pod51017.outlook.com

Step 2

Select SMTP

Server Name needs to be:  pod51017.outlook.com

STEP 3

Leave everything as is and select TEST Connection

(Please note that Changes will be made such as Port 110 for POP and Port 587 for SMTP)

Step 4:

After this takes place Go Into Advanced Settings and

Change Username to Username@btconnect.com for both Server Connections and Outgoing Server connections.

Send yourself a Test email and see if all OK.

Conclusions:  Some Email programs will not support the TLS required for OUTGOING and therefore a new Email program that supports TLS will be Required.  Thunderbird 17 supports the new upgrade BT has implemented with MYOFFICE 365.

Hi The_Ben,

I'm sorry you've been given conflicting advice.  But both Outlook 2003 and windows mail work.

Windows mail will work with the standard settings without issue.

2003 on the other hand (being an older mail client) needs to either use port 25 for sending, or download service pack 3 for outlook 2003 and this will allow you to send out using port 587.

Thanks,

Steve

Our e-mail was upgraded yesterday.  We have not been able to send or receive any e-mails since.  My GM has spent much of the last 24 hours going round in circles with the BT help line, each time with a different support person who insists on doing all the same checks as the previous personnel only to come up with the same result....They do not know what the problem is!

My GM has established that if your BT Connect e-mail address has more than one alias, you are done for!

We have 6 e-mail accounts and all but two have more than one alias (i.e. service @???, accounts @???).  Our main e-mail address info@???  has more than one alias so we are not able to send or receive any of our main customer / supplier e-mails.  We are getting constant phone calls from customers and suppliers saying that e-mails sent to us are bouncing back to them and with a message that our domain does not exist!

BT have said that this problem could take 48 hours to fix! That comment in itself is a joke as they have already admitted that they do not know what the problem is!!  If they succeed, that will take us to lunch time Thursday 20th December.  This is our last working week of this year and the end of our financial year!!  Great, last week of the year and possibly one full day of e-mail  -  IF WE ARE LUCKY??

BT.... You are a disgrace!

I'm not sure how your GM came to this conclusion - I have a couple of btconnect.com addresses with multiple aliases and they were migrated without any difficulty.

When I went into the Upgrade Centre it gave me a choice of which alias I wanted to use as the new login address. Once I was migrated I then used that address to log in (both to MyOffice and the web mail) and reconfigured my Windows Live Mail to use the full domain email address as the login for the mail server.
