FTP stopped working properly

I have been using FTP clients (cuteftp 8 and Serif Webplus X4) for a couple of years to update a couple of small websites I have.   I have BT ininity Broadband connection.   This used to work fine but since last using it a few months ago it has stopped working properly.  It now errors with a timeout message " Timeout (60000 ms) occurred on receiving server response. [01/04/2014 13:10:26] Failed to establish data socket.". This seems to be occuring at the point the server is trying to send a directory listing.  The bizzare thing is that when I try the FTP on the Cute FTP client, immediately after getting this error I can click the up directory button or type in a desired directory and it will happily connect and list and allow data fie uploads!   This would not be a huge problem for the FTP client alone but the integrated FTP client in Serif Webplus just wont restart at an error and it is very tedious to update manually via simple ftp client.  I have spoken to the web hosting co and they claim no changes and no errors at their end.  I have checked but no obvious changes in place at my end.   Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions.

PS. using PASV but also tried PORT.  Login and password correct and accepted by server well before timeout.
