i did it the other way. i had to create the file e.g. google0045745312.html (do this in word by putting the test in and then when you go to save you "save as" and make sure you save it as .html  if it appears as htm rename the file to show html)  and then put the file in the public folder. instead of using ftp the BT website centre has a file manager bit in it. took a little bit of getting used to how it works but it allowed me to upload the file into the public folder.

then i went onto the webmaster tools and verified. hey presto it worked. theres also something called the website optimizer (stupid american spelling!!) that does the same job and will submit you website to yahoo google and some other search engines. it also creates a site map to save as a .gz file which you upload to google webmaster tools

I'm trying to verify my site on google, using .html option.

I'm using Easy Site Wizard, how do I do the .html bit?  Step by step please

Thanks in advance

You could possibly do it using the create new page option, and then naming the page as per the google request, (don't forget to publish it too) however you are probably better doing it the way that alastair described.

right.... from memory so isnt perfect.

they will give you a page to create i.e  google015568763.html for example. your 015568763 will be unique to you.

i went into word.

as the text put google015568763.html

went to file > save as.

i saved the file to the desktop with the name google015568763 and on the "save as" drop down menu i chose web page (htm)

because it saved as google015568763.htm i renamed the file by right clicking it and chose rename. add an L to the end so the file is now google015568763.html (remember your numbers will be different)

the file is now ready to upload to your website.

you can do this via FTP and put it in the public folder or

go to the manage your website area on the BT website

in the BT website centre at the top choose "website management"

on the left you have "file manager"

this is tricky for the novice here to pay close attention

on the bit that says "source dir" double click public. the source dir stuff will change to the contents of your site i.e. index.html etc.

at the bottom there is a browse button. click it and go to desktop. select the google015568763.html file and to the left of the box will be a button called upload. click that and it will upload the file.

now you should be able to access  www.yourwebsitename.com/google015568763.html  it will display the text google015568763 and that is all.

if it doesnt display double check the file isnt called google015568763.htm  it is very important that its called google015568763.html

if you can view that page you can then verify with google successfully.

you MAY need a sitemap to complete the google stuff. if you do and need to know how to get it let me know because i managed to get one made for me on the BT website optimizer

im not sure what is definately required to help google ratings but in addition to the google015568763.html thing i have to do 2 other things. there is a robots.txt thing i uploaded to the public folder and have to upload a sitemap to google.

as i said aswell i went through the BT website optimizer that helps get you on google rankings and also puts you on other search engines. mine took about a week to be searchable via google.

Hi Alastair

That was great, managed to get the site verified, not sure about whether i need a site map though.  I'll have to read through all the google stuff.

Hi,

I have verified my epages site www.sh-electricaldiscounts.co.uk

open webmaster tools, add your website and copy the meta tag that is generated.  Now open your store admin, goto General settings>status>advanced setting.  paste the meta tag into the yellow box and press save. Update your page cache.  Return to webmaster tools and click verify.

You should now be verifyed and a webmaster dashboard page should open.

Hope this works for every one. :smileyhappy:

Hi, I've gone through this recently but my site still isn't picked up by Google when keyword search is used. Does your site get found through keywords by Google now? If so, what did you do?
