Hi there,
I have had an issue with my broadband and phone line since a thunderstorm in December 11.
I have my phone line through BT and my Broadband is through Sky. I have my PC, PS3 and XBOX connected to my router and since the thunderstorm, my router lost connection to the Three ethernet ports that were in use, it also blew the network card on my PC.
Since that happened, whenever I was on the internet and someone tried to call the land line, the phone would either not ring and the internet would disconnect, or it would ring and the internet would disconnect.
I thought that the fault may have lay with the router and as it was a Sky product, I called them about it. They advised that the router would only affect the broadband connection and anything coming through the phone line would be the responsibility of BT. They did however sent me a new router and micro filters.
A bit of research was done and I found out that the fault may have been with the micro filter connected to the line at the time of the storm so upon the installation of the new router, i changed the cables and the filter. This didn't rectify the fault.
I later thought that it it might be an issue with the extension cable that runs from my hall, through to the living room where the router was set up. I disconnected the router and the phone, unplugged the extension and plugged the micro filter with the phone and router attached to it straight into the wall hoping that the extension was faulty.
This didn't work either, exactly the same fault. When someone phoned, the internet cut out. I have also checked the maintenance port inside the socket but cant remember exactly what the results where. I'm going to check again tonight.
Has this happened with anyone before. The router and microfilters have been changed so it has nothing to do with Sky. I am reluctant to phone BT CS due to the stories I have read on here.
Thanks
ChrisL
Just tried a line check on the BT site and got this message.
Sorry, we are not able to test or provide an update on this line.
Please contact us on 0800 800 151 (Residential) or 0800 800 154 (Business) for further assistance.
We apologise for any inconvenience.
Looks like interference to me. Can you try replacing the splitter?
The splitter???
I've now tried changing the channel on the router however that isnt helping anything.
Anyone have any other ideas?
Ta
sounds like a filter issue to me, have you swapped the filter for a new one(reread i see you have), if you have more than one filter, you may need to go around replacing them all.
unplug everything from the phone sockets around your property, and plug them in one at a time until you find the culprit.
obviously you wont find out til someone rings in, so probably use a mobile to call in.
Hey, cheers for the reply.
Yeah, changed all microfilters, even went straight into the master socket with a new microfilter and both modem and phone plugged in and got the same problem.
I think I might need an engineer to come out but I begrudge having to pay out any money.
There is a possibility that the master was damaged during the storm and that can cause problems.
Call up BT - who I believe is your voice provider, and tell them that you have a problem that has been intermittent but getting worse and at times your phone does not ring with incoming calls and you have demonstrated it using your mobile.
Do not mention broadband and it will confuse matters. Tell them you have tried different phones ( I hope you have), and also plugged direct into the test socket.
If you have tried everything and cannot find the fault then getting a Tech out to look and sort it is the only option remaining. He might find the problem is a damaged phone, or bad internal wiring in which case you will be billed, but you have very few options remaining.
I agree , it could be damage to the master socket, very rare but it does happen.
