Slow upload speed

Recently signed up for Dropbox as I need to transfer large files to suppliers. However, I can't achieve upload speeds of more than about 34 kb/s. This is despite speedtest.net indicating a max upload speed of 300 kb/s. The same goes for the Cubby upload service, strongly indicating that the problem lies with BT...

I've tried Macs, PCs, WiFi and wired connections with no difference in speed.

I know this is a basic question, but is the file upload speed 34Kb/s (small b) or 34KB/s (big B)? Broadband speeds are usually measured in Kilo bits where file transfer speeds are often quoted in Kilo bytes.
