I think you need to set up scheduling for when your mobile device will auto synch with the email servers.
That should be somewhere in the "Active Synch" menu under "Schedule"
Now if you're using GPRs then remember if you set it to synchronise every couple of minutes, the connection costs could be quite high - but you can choose to synch during off-peak or peak times to reduce your costs. You should be able to define those times on your device.
Basically you've got to balance your need to keep up to date vs. how much of your allocation you want to eat into using push email...
