Title Tags - How do I change in e pages

Noahs_Ark_Gifts

Hi

I got contacted by BT web hosting to try and sell me an SEO package (yet again!).  This time the guy did a short review and told me to change the Title Tags so that it didn't show "Mozilla Firefox" , so asked how I could change this in e pages (hosted by BT) and told he didn't know how as all he did was SEO, (ie all he did was have enough knowledge to try and sell the SEO package).

I did change my website name and slogan a while back which did appear for a while but seems to have dissapeared.  Please could somebody help me by expalining in simple terms how to change the title tags for each of my pages and not just an overall for the website.

Many thanks

For your homepage go to Settings and click General Settings

On the page shown there should be a text box labelled "Slogan"  Edit the box and whatever you put in here will appear in the heading of your browser when you are on home page.  Also, try and keep the characters (including blanks) less than 85 - apparently Search Engines don't look further than that and don't like longer tags.

Also, avoid "and", "to", "if", "the" etc   these are seen as "dead words" that stop teh search engine from looking beyond them.

For the other pages - go to Contents/Catagoties >> Datasheet View.  This will bring up your list of pages.  If you click and enter one of the pages you should see box headed Title - it appears that whatever you enter here will appear in the Browser header as mentioned above.  Once stick to guildines as mentioned around number of characters etc.

There's a great book i bought called "Search Engine Optimization - An Hour a Day"  Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin.  They also point you to their website which is also full of resources, worksheets, actions etc. and accompanies the book well.

It's not as easy as they make it out but a lot easier than others, plus you can save the few hundred pounds a month the SEO "experts" want to charge you.  You should be able to make small changes which will keep optimising your site bit by bit.

Don't try and do everything at once. Pick one thing/topic at a time and just do that bit.....

Good luck...

Cheers.  Thanks for that, I 'll try it.  Also thanks for the tip on the book.

I've been using my local Business Link and found them very helpful on SEO and linkbuilding courses, so already done some SEO - you're right about the expense of "experts", with SEO it's just a case of little, often and consistant.

Think there is some bug in the system.  I thought I had changed this before and it worked great but just checked it again.

Title tags work when I go through via admin page to my site but if I look at my site by directly entering www.noahsarkgifts.co.uk the title tag has dissapeared and it just says Mozilla Firefox on all pages?

Come on BT what's the problem here?

Have you updated the page cache?

Yep.  First thing I did.

You seem to have the real URL of the shop as http://eshop.noahsarkgifts.co.uk and http://www.noahsarkgifts.co.uk dispaying this in a frame. All you are seeing is the frame tags rather than the actual eshop settings. If you visit the actual shop address of http://eshop.noahsarkgifts.co.uk you see the title tags no problem.

Ask BT to change the address of the shop to www.noahsarkgifts.co.uk and it should fix the issue.

This seems to be BT's default way of setting this up at the moment Smiley Sad

Maybe I should have looked at your site first. The reason why this is happening is really simple.

www.noahsarkgifts.co.uk is "Frame Forwarded" to eshop.noahsarkgifts.co.uk if you click the link to eshop. you will see that in the title bar of your browser reads 'Noah's Ark Gifts - The Home of Soft & Cuddly Animal Toys'.

Pardon my French but what a bunch of a**eholes at BT.

I have spent the last 1½ hours try to resolve this issue without success, still waiting for a yet another call back, yet it was BT own SEO "expert" that set me on this trail!

Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue myself.  Also would I need to re-submit my site map to google once the domain name and title tag issue resolved?

Hello Noahs_Ark_Gifts,

I just had a look at www.noahsarkgifts.co.uk and it seems to be set up correctly with your eShop now. Since the domain name for the shop content pages has been changed you will have to re-submit your Google XML sitemap.

Sincerely,

The eShop Team
