Windows Live Mail and 365 upgrade

ndg
Member

Is anyone else having problems with the 365 upgrade. Despite following instructions and changing settings on my account properties, I am unable to send emails from Windows Live Mail through the 365 system.

Any bright ideas? BT have told me they do not provide support for Windows Live Mail and that as I am trying to send through a Homehub using a business address, it is not possible to send emails. This is, in my opinion, rubbish as I should be able to send and receive anywhere that I can log on, surely?

ANy help on this would be wlecomed

Hi ndg,

Setting up windows live mail is not different to any other mail program, they all use the same settings for office 365 accounts.  The settings are:

Incoming settings
Server name: pop.outlook.com
Port: 995
Encryption method: SSL

outgoing settings
Server name: smtp.outlook.com
Port: 587
Encryption method: TLS (if no TLS option use SSL)

You will also need to check that you have outgoing mail authentication enabled to send through the office 365

servers.

I have intermittent times when one email address fails to send from outlook 2003 it comes up withyour outgoing server does not support ssl, but it had been working and it does work with the other outgoing emails, eventually it will go through, but its pretty frustrating

Hi BrianG,

Outlook 2003 is an old Microsoft program, which used different style of SSL when it was first produced.  To be able to get Outlook 2003 to work with the new Office 365 mail servers, Outlook 2003 needs to be running service pack 3.

If you go to service pack 3 you will be able to download this from microsoft and update your Outlook.  Once it is updated you should be able to send with no more issues using Office 365.

Hi Brian,

Can you doublecheck for windows updates on the machine?  You sometimes have an update for office that needs to be installed.

Also you could try using port 25 on the outgoing server.

Thanks,

I have automatic updates set, but I downloaded SP3 just incase but when I ran it, it said it had already been installed, i will try changing the port, but it seems to be sporadic with different email address's being affected

Thanks Brian,

I've heard its to do with outlook 2003 defaulting to port 25 in some hidden manner, I'd imagine you will already have the office update (different to the SP3) if you have auto updates turned on.

Do you have any email scanning software?  Avast especially has a tendancy to interfere with SSL connections.

Thanks,

Steve
