Logged a call yesterday for broadband fault -
same old issue - Noise Margin drops to below 3dB on the downstream and browsing is painful;
Called in and logged call - informed them Done a Router Swap, nothing on line, its in the test socket, they agree there is a fault as the noise margin down was 2.4dB (13877kbs) and the noise maring up was 16dB (1088kbs)
engineer booked for 8am-1pm
so I get on site and wait, 1pm comes and goes so i call and told he is on the way, and the openreach van turns up and sits outside on his phone for 20mins then drives off!, I call up and after 35 mins, get cut off so I recall and I am told the engineer didnt have the correct kit to do the job, however it could be done at the exchange - while I am gobsmacked my mobile rings and its BT and i am told Openreach couldnt find the address...
trying not to laugh, I place the handsets together and ask them to take turns in telling each other what happend... it then turns out they are sitting near each other.. and they are both right in what they are telling me.. CONFUSED!!
Still no engineer!!
I get put over to a really nice lady who now tells me, sorry the engineer wont be out today, and line tests show you might have a fault on the line hence the SNR resets and i lost the fixed 6db that was done in Feb this year - and an engineer needs to attend..
Fingers crossed I get an engineer tomorrow 🙂
A comment on noise margin. It will initially sync at 6dB then during a 24 hour period it will vary with the total swing maybe 1 to 5dB - due to external and atmospheric noise. At te same time teh following day it should be back to about te same 6dB +/-0.5dB but rain or sun can affect that.
On a stable line the SNR at sync will eventually change to 3dB - again there will be a natural vriantion through the day and it can move towards 0dB. On my old ADSL2+ service (now VDSL/Infinity) I would sync at 3dB and could watch it drop to just below 0dB - the lowest was -0.7dB and my speeds were almost unaffected.
the Engineer turned up, made a call set it back to 6db and straight away we could get to different sites; problem with this customer is they had this issue 3yrs ago at there old building and moved to infinity which resolved the issues.
When they moved to a new building on a larger ind. est. infinity wasnt (and still isnt) available, so they had plain old ADSL installed, for the 1st 12months they had a great time, but since work has been done on the local cab's for the housing est next door to have infinity, they have been suffering.
In Feb it was set to 6 and stayed there for a few months, and in the last month or so it dropped from 3.5 down to 2ish.
main thing is that, the customer is up and running. - even after the mess yesterday 🙂
