how easy to port a BT business number to Voip with another company?

I work as a volunteer for a non profit organisation.  We have encountered a lot of problems in dealing with BT.  I hope someone here can help me.

We (the organisation) have used a BT landline number for over 10 years.  This number was allocated to us by the company who leased us an office in their building.  The number is this company's name.  BT invoices go to this company.  They in turn invoice us, and we pay this company (not BT).  We will be moving a new office location (with a long term lease), and want to port the number to this new location.  Currently we have the number redirected to an office mobile number - we still pay the bills for this number to the company whose name is on the bills.

We have been given the runaround by BT for the past few months.  BT call centre staff kept promising to call me back or send me emails etc, but never did.  We got agreement (in writing) from the company whose name is on the bills to release the number to us.

Now BT is saying that we cannot port the number to our new office location because it is on a different exchange location!  So, we are thinking if we should go to a Voip company and ask them to port the number for us.  We do want to keep the number because we have had it for over 10 years and everyone we deal with has it.  We are reluctant to get another number.

Does anyone know if this is do-able?  Will BT give the voip company the same problems they have given us?  They said the number is not in our organisation name, so they will not let us have it - eventhough we have been paying the bills for this number for more than 10 years, and we have the agreement from the company having this number that they have spoken to BT and want us to have the number.

Please help!  Thank you.
