Want to make sure you’re getting the best possible speeds out of your Broadband? Here’s some tips on how to optimise your connection.
Check your broadband wiring:
- Connecting your router directly into the master socket gives you the best speed. If you need to use an extension, avoid using a long extension cable.
- Make sure there’s no loose connections or cables as this could be affecting your connection.
- Switching off your router can incorrectly make it look like your broadband is dropping, so the line speed could be automatically reduced to try and make the line more stable. Leave your router turned on as much as possible to avoid this.
- Connect your PC directly to your router with an Ethernet cable for a faster speed.
Check your devices:
- Devices can get ‘old’ quickly – check the settings to make sure it can support your broadband speeds. The same goes for your browser so make sure it’s up to date.
- Too many apps or files can slow down a device. You should regularly clear out any that are unneeded and empty your cache on your browser.
- Viruses can slow down your devices so make sure you’re regularly scanning your devices with anti-virus and anti-malware software to keep yourself safe.
- The number of devices and apps being used at once will affect your connection speed so turn off any that you don’t need.
- Restarting your devices occasionally can improve performance so make sure to turn it off and on again every so often.
Check your wi-fi:
- Position your router in the centre of the room, avoiding walls and windows to allow the signal to travel the furthest without interruption. This means keeping it out in the open and elevated, so no sticking it in a cupboard or leaving it on the ground.
- Routers are affected by electrical interference so make sure it's at least 5 feet away from any electrical or metal such as TVs, halogen lamps, microwaves and so on. Even mirrors can cause interference!
- Interference from other devices in the area that are on the same wireless channel can also affect the performance of your router’s wi-fi. A wireless channel is the frequency your router sends its wi-fi signal out on. You can change your wireless channel in your router settings to help avoid this interference.
