We’re starting a series of blogs posts about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the impact it has on businesses, both good and bad. We’re keen to hear from business users what areas they want us to discuss, so please leave a comment below. For our first post, we are kicking off today with a discussion about summative AI.

What is Summative AI?

Summative AI refers to AI tools that can take a long piece of text such as an article or a long email and reduce it down to a much shorter length. Apple recently launched their ‘Apple Intelligence’ which can read your texts via iMessage and provide you with a summary of the topics of conversation. Their operating system for Macs also can do this, giving you a quick idea of what the emails in your inbox are about with just a glance or condensing down entire documents down to their key points.

While this can be helpful to handle you manage your inbox or skim over a long document, summative AI can also have an unintended impact on your business if you rely on people accessing your articles or posts on your website.

Google’s new AI Overview appears at the top of their search results when suitable, giving users a quick answer to their query pulled from sources online. Whilst users might get their answer quicker, for the website publishers the Overview uses as a source it has driven people away from their website, resulting in reduced traffic.

Often publishers that post this sort of content rely on traffic to help generate revenue through either embedded advertising on their website or offering a subscription service to viewers. If a user isn’t accessing their website to read the information, this takes away the chance for either to be shown to the potential customer.

As AI is integrated into more industries and technology, challenges like this will continue to rear their head as we grapple with the changes it will bring.
