Static IP

Hi,

I've used BT Business with a static IP for many years but recently it's been changing which causes issues with our FTP server connections.

Can someone please confirm if rebooting our router would cause this or if it should remain static even if the router is rebooted or we have a powercut as that has happended and could be the cause?

Many thanks

Tony

Hi tonyg0071

It should remain the same if properly set up on your router. What router are you using?

Hi Tony 👋

Your static IP should remain the same, even after a router reboot or power cut, as long as it’s correctly set up on your BT Business broadband service. A reboot on its own should not cause a static IP to change.

🔍 A few things to check:

1️⃣ Are you using a single static IP or a range?
If you only have one static IP, your hub normally assigns it automatically — no extra configuration needed.
If you have a block of static IPs, the hub must be configured using the right router address and subnet. BT provides official setup guidance here:
👉 Configure Static IP on BT Business Hub [business.bt.com]

2️⃣ Has anything changed in the hub config?
Incorrect settings (e.g., turning on the Static IP toggle when you only have 1 static IP) can cause routing issues. This is a known scenario discussed by BT support:

🛠️ If your static IP is changing

That typically means one of the following:

  • The hub isn’t configured correctly
  • The service on your account isn’t provisioned as a static IP anymore
  • You're actually receiving a dynamic IP due to a configuration/ordering issue

In these cases, the BT Business Technical Helpdesk can check your account and confirm the correct static IP details:
