Hi,
I have a BT business broadband account with 5 static IP addresses. I was also provided with a network address and a router address.
I am attempting to setup a site-to-site VPN on my linksys router. When i do this it takes the the router IP address as the end point for the VPN.
Unfortunately BT is assigning a non-fixed IP address to the router, which means I cannot provide static details to the external company that needs access.
I have attempted to assign the fixed router IP address to the router that was provided, but this causes PPP negotiation failiure and I cannot get access to the WAN.
So...I have a few questions
1) Is there any way of providing a fixed IP address for my router to allow static site-to-site VON setup
2) what is the static router IP address for if it cannot be assigned to the router
3) Are there any other options available to me to allow me to configure fixed IP site-to-site
Thanks
Steve
hi Gringosteve,
I would suggest for yourself a Single Static IP Address which is automatically assigned to the router,
now for Multi statics the "Dynamic" address your talking about is the peer address which is used to route your IPs to you,
what you can do is assign the IPs accross the LAN side of the Network, pointing to the devices inside the network which would then keep the Static Routing,
I don't know how to do this on the Linksys router, I've only done on BT supplied Equipment,
if you assign the Default gateway for your IP Range to your Lan side of the router and then use the router to assign the Devices on your network Your Ips, This will have static Routing and so longs ports etc are open on your router/firewalls you will have VPN throughput,
good Luck, it can be confusing at first if it gets a bit Confusing the IT Support Manager Team might be able to offer some better insight, and they can set up the router etc for you, but they do charge £25 every 30 mins I belive,
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
If i use the BT supplied gateway address as the router IP address, and the router assigns ip addresses out to devices on the LAN, what would happen when i connected additional machines above and beyond my 5 fixed IP addresses? I am assuming i would run into issues?
What I need is a publicy exposed VPN end point (our router) with a fixed VPN, a couple of public IP addresses for some servers, and the rest to be private LAN accessible from the VPN. We have more than 5 machines so I am assuing classical (no nat) routing is not an option?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Steve
Have a look at my reply in the thread below (it's the last reply at time of posting), this may shed some light on your issue.

Hi Gringosteve. Try with DHCP first with your router then take downnotes on the IP received, then assign it as static.
This line might help you out from the thread suggested above. "Business Hub as the router itself can't have one of the static IP's."
Good luck.
Thanks for explain difference between Static ip and VPN fun. You choose write way for explain it and also give nice steps so i am really happy to read it.....
