IP Address Change for Broadband for Phone System

Please note I am not technically minded at all.

We have a BT cloud voice phone system with Avaya phones, we had to take BT broadband to run the phone system (it has a specific IP address the system needs to work)?!

We also have full fibre broadband with another provider and want to run the phones from this broadband as the BT broadband is out of contract.

BT want us to upgrade to new phone system but our current system is fit for purpose and only 4 years old, phone usage is also minimal as a business. The contract on the phones ends in April 2026.

BT have advised there would be a minimum engineering charge of £385.00 + VAT to basically change the IP address as I understand. This cost seems really high, are there any other solutions?

Switching your Avaya phones from BT's broadband to your full fibre connection is more complex than simply changing an IP address, which is why BT is quoting a significant fee. Your current setup likely uses a dedicated BT network configuration that ensures the phones work correctly and securely. This is often referred to as a "specific IP address the system needs to work." Moving the phones to a different network, even if it's faster, requires reconfiguring the phone system to work on the new network's settings and address any security or quality-of-service issues that may arise. Given the potential technical complexities and the fact that your phone contract ends relatively soon, exploring alternative options, such as negotiating a better deal with BT or considering a new, simpler phone system with a different provider when your contract is up, might be more cost-effective in the long run than paying a high one-time fee and risking potential service issues.

Hi lizlsp

You do not need to use our broadband to run Cloud Voice but you do for Cloud Voice Express. You should be able to get support for this system over the phone.
